'POSTCARDS FROM NYC' FEAT. IN RUSSH

New York moves fast, but Natasha Veenhuizen kept pace. Touching down in the city for the 2025 We Wear Australian x Australia Post activation, the designer and director of Van Der Kooij sent postcards home – snapshots of a week filled with creativity, collaboration, and the electric pulse of Soho.

Selected alongside 11 other Australian designers, it was a milestone moment for her sustainability-focused brand. The lead-up was a whirlwind of final adjustments, but once the doors opened, the energy was undeniable. Late-night walks through the city, impromptu magazine store visits, and quiet moments with her designs on display under the city lights – these were the details she captured between the rush, weaving together a New York story of fashion, inspiration, and the thrill of being part of something bigger.

The excitement and anticipation was high as we prepped for New York. It was all hands-on deck—final tweaks and last-minute adjustments to the outfits kept me on my toes. As a sustainable, emerging brand to be chosen alongside 11 other Australian designers to be a part of the We Wear Australian x Australia Post activation brings an immense sense of pride and anticipation.

The journey began with the typical pre-launch jitters. I touched down in New York and hit the ground running. Last-minute finishing touches and tweaks on outfits kept me busy as I prepared for the activation.

I was thrilled to be part of such a vibrant and talented group of designers with the We Wear Australia team. We bumped into the venue together, and the energy was electric as we set up and brought the vision to life.

Jetlag hit hard, but I found solace in late-night walks through the city. I wandered the streets, visiting magazine stores, heading to our fave Bleecker St film lab, and popping past the activation to see our Franka Gown on show before the doors open — it was a beautiful sight under the city lights. These moments of stillness were a quiet contrast to the fast-paced energy of NYC.

Showcasing alongside Karina (Relax Remade) and Kaylene (Wah Wah) was such a beautiful experience, and we were excited to collaborate on a photoshoot. Scheduled following the biggest dump of snow of the season meant our model braved the cold like a champion.

The crisp winter air added a layer of magic to the shoot, and the snow-covered streets made for a stunning backdrop. Walking through the neighbourhoods of New York also offered constant inspiration—the diversity, the architecture, and the hustle and bustle of the city were always captivating.

After the intensity of the pop-up, I took some time to unwind. A day off in the city led me to an unexpected find: a Pacer store (every kind of mechanical pencil you could dream of), clearly one of my personal obsessions.

Ready to indulge in some retail therapy I jumped on the subway and made my way to Brooklyn for some vintage shopping. Thank you Freddie Fredricks for the recs… the finds were extraordinary! Stopping at the infamous Birds of a Feather for lunch.

As my time in New York came to a close, I squeezed in a quick visit to MoMA to soak in some art before the final event of the trip—a beautiful wrap dinner hosted by Australia Post at Alba for all the We Wear Australia designers. It was the perfect way to end the trip, surrounded by like-minded creatives and the undeniable magic of New York.
